Before the Cambrian explosion, most organisms were simple individual cells, or small multi-celled organisms. Around 540 million years ago something changed. Early plants cooled the climate and increased the oxygen level in the Earth’s atmosphere. The rate of diversification suddenly accelerated and resulted in a variety of life.
