This group is designed to give LGBT older adults (ages 50+) a dedicated space to come together and discuss topics with other older adults relevant to their identities and experiences. During discussion groups, a facilitator will guide the conversation and encourage participants to share their perspectives on various issues/topics in a safe and respectful space.

In this seminar, we will explore the impact of heteronormativity and cis-normativity related to the topic of “coming out,” aging, and coming out later in life. We will discuss the challenges of navigating new environments and new people as members of the LGBT+ community and the stressful, complex, and emotional experiences of determining whether it is safe to reveal gender and sexual identity within spaces for older adults. In addition, we will discuss the difficulties of “coming out” and exploring gender and sexual identity later in life.
