Etching as a form of print-making emerged suddenly in the early 1500s, first borrowed from designs on armor. Artists soon discovered that it allowed far greater freedom than the traditional engraving technique and the medium grew internationally as a way of creating original works of art, a procedure later immortalized by artists like Rembrandt and Goya.
