Description

Stone Age art is complex, stunning, and mysterious. How did our Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon ancestors manage to survive the harsh conditions – the bitter cold – of Ice Age Europe to produce some of the world’s greatest art? The goal of this overview is to provide both physical and cultural context for this art, in hopes of enhancing our understanding and appreciation of it. PART I focuses on the physical: the fossil record (discovery, analysis, paleo-artist reconstructions); the environment (caves, climate, animals); and includes examples of human activity (footprints, lamps, burials). Casts of fossil skulls and lithic tools (e.g. handaxes) will be on display!
