In the 1930s Matisse’s work moved towards a greater simplification and boldness.  This can be seen in the mural he created for Albert Barnes and foreshadowed his later work with cutouts.  We will explore the hardships of WW II on Matisse and his family, his collaboration with other artists, his trip to Tahiti and the United States as well as his uninterrupted focus on experimentation. Lastly we will take a look at the cutouts and the chapel in Vence which he designed and decorated.
