Description

When Verdi died in 1901 people said the world of Italian opera was over. When Puccini died in 1924, they said the same thing. This class will explore the career of Gian Carlo Menotti, one of Italy’s underappreciated composers. We will discuss his long time relationship with fellow composer Samuel Barber and his contribution to the Spoleto festivals, both in Italy and the US; and we’ll share audio and visual examples of his works, including clips from a 1955 video of his classic Amahl and the Night Visitors.
