Description
Montgomery Meigs, best known as the Quartermaster General of the Union Army, began his Army career as an engineer. In that role, he made lasting contributions to the Washington region. Meigs designed and built the aqueduct still supplying DC with its water and he oversaw the building of the House and Senate wings and the dome of the Capitol. As an architect he contributed to the Smithsonian Arts and Industry Building and designed the Pension Building.
