Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti, renowned poet, playwright, painter, publisher and founder of the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, passed into the “Coney Island of the Mind” great blue yonder this February at the age of 101. A force in the Beat movement (Beat Generation) Lawrence and his cohorts were the American social and literary movement that originated in the 1950s, challenged the status quo and centered in the bohemian artist communities of San Francisco’s North Beach, Los Angeles’ Venice West, and New York City’s Greenwich Village.

What were their theories and ambitions? Why did Ferlinghetti end up in jail? Join us for a leap into the life and times of this icon. We also will focus on certain pieces of his art and poetry. Seretta will share her amusing memories of the time she spent with Ferlinghetti at a downtown cafe when he appeared at a poetry fair in San Diego.
