At 5:15 on a calm morning in April 1906, the colorful and lively city of San Francisco was suddenly shaken by a violent earthquake that measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale. The Earth shook and the sky burned as the city by the bay was consumed in an inferno that lasted for three days. Famous and beautiful landmarks and Gold Rush-era mansions were reduced to splinters and ashes. More than three thousand people lost their lives. Even today more than eleven decades later, traces of the disaster still linger. This is the story of the day that defined San Francisco as a Phoenix that rose from the ashes.
