Katherine Jellison will present an overview of the role of U.S. first ladies from 1789 to the present. She will discuss the four major categories of first lady—the celebrity, the controversial first lady, the reluctant first lady, and the political partner—and will focus particular attention on a woman who embodied all four categories: Eleanor Roosevelt.
