The capital cities Washington, DC, and Paris are both renowned for their beauty and share gleaming monuments, classical public buildings, broad boulevards, and verdant public parks. Yet underneath the broad urban design commonalities are dramatically different ideas and histories. This lecture compares the qualities that give Paris and Washington their distinctive beauty but which arose out of such different historical and aesthetic considerations.
