The first documented use of a state sponsored postal system employed trusted couriers to transport messages since the time of Egyptian Pharaohs in 2400 BCE. Modern postal systems are organized by national or private services and transport postcards, letters and parcels. Today, 189 countries are members of the Universal Postal Union and have agreements to accept and deliver international mail to and from each other. The USPS, having been in operation since the colonial period is currently under siege due to debt and a political desire for privatization. This presentation reviews the history of global postal systems and scrutinizes the issues plaguing the USPS.
