Description
Mummies are preserved bodies of people or animals. Some bodies are naturally preserved by environments with freezing, dry, or marshy conditions. Alternatively, some cultures have intentionally preserved their dead through the practice of embalming. In 1994, scientists at the Anatomical Services Division at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine recreated the Egyptian method of mummification. They used the cadaver of a Baltimore man who had died in his seventies of heart failure after donating his body to science. The scientists transformed the body into an Egyptian-style mummy following 2,000-year-old descriptions of mummifying techniques.
