Six pilots died trying to claim the $25,000 Orteig Prize for flying non-stop from New York to Paris before Charles Lindbergh succeeded in 1927 and wrote a new chapter into aviation history. The prize generated considerable investment in aircraft technology, sometimes many times the value of the prize itself, and increased public interest in flying.
