Current Issues in Global Justice This course introduces the concept of global justice focusing on three issues in international politics today: sovereignty, immigration and citizenship, and “just war.” Suggested readings include scholarly articles and news accounts of today’s wars in Europe and the Middle East, migration policies in the U.S. and Europe, and international humanitarian law and action.
Session IV. Just War. Is war ever just? This question has troubled us since the beginning of human civilization. “Just war theory” is primarily attributed to Thomas Aquinas, a 13th-century Catholic saint and theologian, who posited that a “just war” is waged by a just government with a just cause and just intent. Leaving room for interpretation, the theory has been revised repeatedly over time. In the end, the question remains: is war ever just?
