We typically think of musical satire as fun parodies or novelty songs by the likes of Spike Jones and Weird Al Yankovic, but true musical satire involves making fun of music itself. This could be an unexpected shift from classically influenced rhythms to jazzier influences or by incorporating a modern pop tune into a classical favorite. Peter Schickele, under the pseudonym P. D. Q. Bach, is probably the best-known artist of this brand of music. Comedian Allan Sher man teamed up with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra for an album entitled “Peter and the Commissar,” which poked fun at communism in the Soviet Union.
