Have you ever wondered why every American knows the phrase “beam me up” or knows who Kirk and Spock are? This lecture explores the origins of the cultural phenomenon known as Star Trek. We will examine how Star Trek: The Original Series reflected historical events, forces, and ideas of 1960’s America. In particular we will investigate how Star Trek addressed important contemporary social and cultural issues ranging from war and foreign policy to religion and race.
