Beliefs about medical disorders determine the theories of medical science and more importantly how psychiatric patients are treated. Unfortunately, the classification of mental disorders by the American Psychiatric Association are ill-defined and mostly arbitrary. Prof. Mario Garrett explores how beliefs create madness and provide us with a critique of psychiatric definitions and argues for an alternative way to treat diseases that existed before drugs and profit: “moral treatment.”
