Description

There is no known culture in which people do not paint, pierce, tattoo, reshape, or simply adorn the unique canvas which is the human body. Diverse cultures throughout the world decorate their bodies in countless ways and for various reasons. In fact, the underlying reasons behind body ornamentation are as varied as the artwork itself. Body ornamentation may be associated with ritual, mark a rite of passage, enhance beauty, symbolize group identity and affiliation, or be a personal statement of independence and self-determination. This lecture will focus on the beautiful designs and artwork depicted in body painting, tattooing, scarification, and piercing.
