Beginning in 1769 the region we call home gradually changed from a land inhabited only by native people (Kumeyaay and Luiseño) to lands claimed by Spain. Where was Alta California’s first Catholic Mission? Not where it is today in Mission Valley. The first Mission San Diego de Alcalá was established on what is now Presidio Hill just above Old Town. On this myth-busting, informative tour into the late 1700s and early 1800s Richard L. Carrico will use archaeological, historical, and oral narratives to reveal San Diego’s Hispanic past. Native Americans played a huge role in that past and Richard will weave their story into the transition from Spanish colony to Mexican pueblo. This lecture is part two of a three part series.
