Description
Captain William Kidd was commissioned in 1690 by New York City and Massachusetts to rid the East Coast of enemy privateers. Five years later he received a royal commission from Great Britain to apprehend pirates who molested the East India Company. After several years policing the North Atlantic he had failed to triumph over an adversary and decided to turn to piracy. Kidd was tried in London in 1701 and was hanged. Some of his treasure was recovered off Long Island but the rest is still sought by fortune hunters today.
