Description

Matisse gained wide attention during his Fauvist years, beginning in 1905. He then changed course. We will examine the influence of African art, Picasso and the Steins had on Matisse’s work and career in the early part of the century.  This was followed by a much greater use of patterns and a move towards abstraction.  The impact of WW I, his move to the south of France and travel to northern Africa will also be discussed.
