Description

Research finds that 20% of persons who develop brain disease (e.g. Alzheimer’s) show a delayed progression of cognitive deterioration. How do those people remain resilient even to severe amounts of disease in their brain?  Experts believe this is due to the development of “brain reserve” and/or “cognitive reserve.” Research has shown that aspects of life experience, such as educational or occupational attainment, can impart reserve against brain pathology, allowing some people to maintain function longer than others. We will look at the factors underlying the development of “cognitive reserve” and suggest six ways in which this reserve may be achieved.
