In the United States we have a long tradition of separating church and state. Even further, many political thinkers have argued that government should be “morally neutral” regarding the values by which citizens live their lives. Is it desirable? Is it even possible? How can government legislate on matters like abortion or same-sex marriage if it is neutral about values?
