Let’s go island hopping! In this series, we explore the history, culture, and geography of selected island nations. Our travels take us from the Caribbean to the South China Sea to Oceania. Bring your (virtual) sandals and sunscreen, but be prepared for surprises! In this 3-part program, we explore the Caribbean Islands. Our first session takes us beyond the pirates to explore how Spanish, English, and French colonial occupation, along with the economics of slavery, have shaped the fates of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Our Cuban adventure takes us to an island famous for tobacco, vintage American cars, and Communism. Finally, we island-hop across the smaller Caribbean islands as we discuss tax havens, slavery, and colonialism…. And of course, the weather, the food, and the beautiful scenery!
