Description
Our current understanding of how the mind works provides some insights into what brain mechanisms generate religious beliefs. Drawing on the work of anthropologists, cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists and functional MRI research, we can now identify the mental mechanisms that underlie the belief in god(s) and the supernatural. The continuity from tribal mentality to modern day religion is examined and illustrated with historical and contemporary examples.
