With the rise of the Casino era, many of us are now aware of a few of the Indian reservations in San Diego County. Twenty-five years ago, this was not the case. Most people were uninformed about the tribes beyond ideas about the Mission Era in the late 1700s. Today, there are four separate Indian tribes and 17 Tribal reservations in San Diego County. Our county has more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States. These include the Kumeyaay, the Luiseño, the Cupeño and the Cahuilla tribes. These tribes have material culture, ceremonies, and practices unique to each group. There are also four languages spoken among these four tribes. In this lecture, we examine the origins of these tribes and introduce some fascinating aspects of their rich and storied prehistory and history.
