As Jazz entered the 1950s, it achieved mainstream status in the musical world. Ensembles led by George Shearing, Fave Brubeck, and John Lewis sold millions of LPs and jazz radio stations began to dot both the AM and the FM dials. Shortly after the decade began, “Cool” or “West Coast Jazz” arrived, spearheaded by sax players like Stan Getz and multi-faceted pianists like Andre Previn, while East Coast artists like Ahmad Jamal and Bill Evans began to seamlessly blend Bach, Bop, and popular standards in tightly led piano trios.
