Professor Siek begins with the 1940’s and the “Titans,” pianists whose command of the instrument was so overwhelming that they compared favorably to the greatest concert pianists of the 20th century. First he explores the genius of Art Tatum, often regarded as the greatest jazz artist of all time. Other Titans include pianists mentored by Tatum, including Oscar Peterson, Nat Cole, Hazel Scott, Erroll Garner, and Bud Powell, who is sometimes regarded as the link between swing styles and the newer language called “Bop.”
