Author and physician, Dr. Dave Peck, will explore the highlights of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which explored the newly purchased Louisiana Territory from 1803-06. Although they had no formal medical training, the captains served as the physicians for their group of 32, and only lost one of their group to death. Dr. Peck will explore medical thinking from antiquity to the times of Lewis and Clark, and let you appreciate what they did, and did not understand about medicine. Grizzly bear attacks, flash floods, dysentery, 7-inch hail stones and heat- related injuries were just a few of the problems they encountered. You will feel lucky to be living in the world of 2024 and marvel at the success of their perilous expedition.
Dr. David Peck is a retired San Diego physician and author of two books on the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-06. Dr Peck was a National Endowment for the Arts sponsored speaker during the bicentennial celebration of this great historic event in 2003-06.
