Description
The famous Egyptian carved lion body with a human head placed on top, called the Great Sphinx, has been written about since ancient times as one of the world’s greatest wonders. Limestone sculpted in place became the body, however, the head of is not part of the carved-in-place lion body. It is constructed from a more durable limestone and does not show the same type of water erosion as the body, indicating that the head may have been added later. Egyptologists generally believe the Sphinx may have been carved around 4,600 years ago by order of Pharaoh Khafre at the beginning of the Old Kingdom Period. This lecture examines possibilities of how one of the world’s greatest monuments could have been designed and carved.
