To encourage aviation, a $25,000 prize was offered for the first pilot to fly non-stop from New York to Paris – a flight of 3,600-plus miles. The prize money was the equivalent of $440,000 in today’s dollars. A number of famous aviators attempted the flight, six dying in the attempt, before a relatively unknown American, Charles Lindbergh, captured the prize in his aircraft the Spirit of St. Louis.
