They could be identified as the Scandinavian impressionists, but the painters of Skagen were as much influenced by the Realist movement as the famous French movement. Skagen, located in the northernmost part of Denmark, attracted artists as much for the quality of light as for the yearning to escape the rigid traditions of the Danish and Swedish art academies.
