This lecture is about how a quiet man from Japan, sent to a diplomatic post in Eastern Europe only six months before the Nazi invasion of Poland, became a great hero. The Samurai, as he was called, defied his superiors in order to secretly help thousands of Eastern European Jews escape certain death. Never telling anyone of his heroism, it wasn’t until thirty years later that a survivor he had saved revealed his courageous acts, and his identity became known. This is the story of who he was, what he did, and what it cost him.
