Surprisingly, Satan (the “devil”) rarely appears in the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible. We will first raise the larger question of how the people of the Old Testament explained the presence of evil in their world. Their explanation shifted over time and eventually was codified in the form of Satan. Where did this idea come from and what is Satan’s relationship to God?
