Description

In this special holiday presentation of the First Chanukah, we’ll travel back in time together to the era of the Maccabees. Ancient documents and archaeological sites reveal the story of decades of wars between a military superpower, the Syrian-Greeks, and a Jewish militia in the Judean Hills. Using guerrilla warfare and asymmetrical tactics, the band of Jewish patriots successfully defended their homeland and their way of life after the Syrian-Greeks decided to incorporate Israel into their empire and force all Jews to abandon monotheism. The Temple was cleaned and rededicated in 162 BCE, and the holiday that followed, still celebrated today, is named Chanukah, a historical festival of liberation.
