Crime shows such as CSI and Bones are extremely popular with the American public. However, the technology available for investigating a scene or a crime is often exaggerated. This can lead to unrealistic expectations about a criminal investigation and/or what is supposed to happen in a trial. In fact, scientists have started calling this “The CSI effect.” In some cases, jurors may have a false expectation of plentiful scientific evidence and have come to demand more forensic evidence in criminal trials, thereby raising the burden of proof for prosecutors.
