Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist uses pattern, repetition and color to create rhythmic paintings, sculptures and installations. In the 1960’s she was at the epicenter of the New York avant-garde finding success with her staged happenings, her net paintings and large-scale immersive installations. In the 1980s, her work gained worldwide recognition. Today she is best known for her Infinity Rooms and large colorful paintings.
Louise Nevelson born in the Ukraine, came to the US at the age of 5. She became famous for are her monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Nevelson was one of the first to create environmental sculptures. Most of these are made of wood and scraps she found on the street. A trip she took to Mexico, her family background and the gentrification of New York significantly influenced her work.
