Description
This class will explore the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran and examine their contents and importance. We will discuss the historical and physical context of the Essene community, which produced the scrolls. We will consider what the scrolls suggest about the development of the text of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. Finally, we will consider the significance of the scrolls in understanding the developments in second-temple Judaism and early Christianity.
