Description
French wines had long had the reputation of being the most outstanding in the world. That changed abruptly at an international wine tasting in Paris in 1976. California wines from Napa County were judged the best in the Chardonnay category and the best in the red wine category. The quality of California wines had been increasing and by the early 1970s some had become outstanding. The wine tasting event was called “Judgement in Paris.” Wine educator Matilda Parente probes the intrigue and the people behind the 1976 wine tasting and its aftermath, which reshaped American cultural and economic history, along with the world of wine.
