King James I of England’s interest in witches caused Shakespeare to write Macbeth for his court because of the three witches and their prophesies.  You may have heard of the women (and black cats) who lost their lives in the Middle Ages and later in Europe.  Professor Kim Keeline will give an overview of the belief in witches, the truth of behind the executions, and the effect that the belief in witchcraft had on the culture and literature of Europe, particularly in England.
