Description

This lecture will investigate literary, theatrical, and cinematic representations of the witch. We will discuss classical portrayals of the female witch in mythology, the folklore surrounding the witch trials of the Early Modern period, as well as contemporary media representations of witches. Most importantly, we will ponder what these characterizations reveal about women’s positions in society. Join Sydney Folsom in an exploration of the symbolic meaning of “witches” as we contemplate the complex ways this character has both upheld and subverted traditional values and constructions.
